# Create Document from a Template for Content Plan Items (RIM)

You can configure the **Create from Document** user action on the _Content Plan Item_ object lifecycle to allow users to generate documents from a _Controlled Document Template_. When users initiate this action, Vault creates a new document and automatically matches it to the corresponding _Content Plan Item_ record.

You can also use _Controlled Document Templates_ to configure and include Table of Contents (TOC) documents in both [report level content plans](/en/lr/47956/) and [submission content plans](/en/lr/37474/). In this case, you can configure the **Create from Document** user action to generate a TOC based on the content plan hierarchy that includes bookmarks from documents matched to _Content Plan Item_ records. ## About the Create from Document Field

The _Create from Document_ (`create_from_document__v`) field is an object field that controls the ability to associate document templates, such as a TOC, to a _Content Plan Item Template_ record. You can add this field to any _Content Plan Item Template_ page layout.

## About the Create from Document User Action

You can add the **Create from Document** user action to the _Content Plan Item_ object lifecycle. This allows users to create a document or TOC for any _Content Plan Item_ associated to a _Content Plan Item Template_.

When users select this action, Vault automatically matches the document to the corresponding _Content Plan Item_. The document type, subtype, and classification are based on the _Content Plan Item_ record's _Full Document Type_ field. Note that document creation fails if the _Content Plan Item Template_ references an archived document.

## Related Permissions

In order for the **Create Document From Template** action from the _Content Plan Item_ record to complete successfully, the user initiating the action must have _Manage Viewable Rendition_ permission on the document lifecycle's starting state.
