# Using Dynamic Linking (RIM)

While authoring submission content, you can create cross-document [permalinks][1] within the source document that target bookmarks and destinations within Vault. In Microsoft Word documents, links that you create can persist even as content changes during the authoring process. Vault opens embedded links in a new [mini-browser window](/en/lr/3815/#embedded-internal-links) or [tab](/en/lr/3815/#embedded-external-links) for easy document review.

In RIM Submissions, Vault can also convert links targeting destinations to links targeting a page and coordinates. Admins must [enable this feature](/en/lr/47956/) in RIM Submissions Vaults.

## About Vault Permalinks {#permalinks}

Vault permalinks, or permanent links, are persistent identifiers that target a location in a document across versions. For example, when a user updates a target document by adding a new page before the link target, Vault automatically updates the permalink to target the new location to account for the change. Dynamic links can persist even when the target is a Vault-generated rendition of a MS Word document.

## About Dynamic Linking in MS Word Documents

When Dynamic Linking is enabled, Vault updates your MS Word DOCX source documents to include PDF destinations for each heading, table, figure, and title style in the document. These persist within the viewable rendition's bookmark targets as well as within the MS Word document itself.

Note: After uploading your DOCX source document to Vault, we recommend checking out your document and checking it back in. By doing this, viewable renditions and permalinks will continue to target the most current location.

## Creating Links

To create permalinks in your document:

 1. Check out the desired document from Vault and open it.
 2. Select the text you wish to use for your link.
 3. Right-click on the selected text and click **Link** to open up the _Insert Hyperlink_ dialog.
 4. Open the document you wish to link to in Vault.
 5. Open the **Bookmark** panel.
 6. Hover over the section you wish to target and click the **Copy Link** icon. This copies the URL for the specified section to your clipboard.
 7. Return to the _Insert Hyperlink_ dialog in MS Word and paste the URL into the **Address** field.
 8. Save the document and check it back into Vault. Users can now navigate from the source document to the target document using the new link.

During the publishing process, Vault converts permalinks to PDF relative path links. If multiple actions are associated with a link, Vault inspects all actions on the link and enables navigation for the first supported action.

## Creating Link Annotations to Permalinks

When enabled, you can create link annotations that reference permalinks. Link annotations to permalinks always direct users to the latest version of the target document. See [Using Link Annotations & Document Links](/en/lr/15303/#permalinks) for detailed instructions.

## Dynamic Link Publishing

During the publishing process, Vault converts MS Word web links created with copied bookmark or destination links in Vault to standard PDF hyperlinks with relative paths based on the _Published Output Location_ (`xml_xlinkhref__v`) field on the _Content Plan_ record.

## Limitations

When Dynamic Linking is enabled, Vault may not render DOCX source documents with more than 1,500 bookmarks.
